Cast Glass Quilts – The Process

A lot of patrons and other artists ask me how I make the glass quilts.  As I explain that glass quilt is cast from a real fabric quilt piece, I start to see the wheels turning and receive questions like, “So you mean you put the glass on the quilt and put it into the kiln Doesn’t it burn up?

Generally, the fabric quilts cannot be salvaged during this process.  Occasionally, they survive, but the lose their hand and frequently the color is distorted by the heat that occurs when the mold cures.  The original mold had to be broken to release the glass.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is even better.  So I compiled photos I’ve taken making various quilts over the last year to better explain the work involved.
