Enamel Painting Quokka

Prayers from Rottnest

In stock

I was struck by the videos and photos coming out of the Australia Bush Fires in 2019-2020 and started a mini series of enamel paintings.  Prayers from Rottnest features a Quokka, who happens to be begging for treats. Rottnest Island is across from the mainland of Australia and we can see the fires burning across the way.

Quokkas are best known for their permanent smiles. Like their “cousins”, kangaroos and wallabies, they are a marsupial. Quokkas live on both the mainland of Australia, where the bushfires were raging, and the Rottnest Island.

Interesting Fact: If threatened, a Quokka mum will kick out the baby in her pouch to save herself!

Painted using vitreous enamels. Each layer is fired in the kiln prior to the painting of the next layer. The base glass is salvaged glass that came from old store shelving.

MOUNTED SIZE: 24 x 18 x 1 5/8 inches

Permanently mounted to a professional birch and pine cradle board and wired for easy hanging.  The supported cradle board has been painted black and sealed with micro-crystalline wax.
